Where? Trinidad. Influences from Africa, Spain, France and Britain.
When? Traditional. Created by African Slaves working on Sugar and Cotton
Lyrics - The lyrics were used by the slaves to communicate. They often told stories and described social issues. EXTEMPO is a type of Calypso where the lyrics are IMPROVISED.
Rhythm Calypso music is SYNCOPATED. It is in 2/4 or 4/4 time but the beats are divided into a 3-3-2 pattern. This is like having three beats in a bar with the third beat shorter than the first two.
Steel Pans- These are Tuned Percussion instruments. Originally made from Oil Drums. The concave surface of the drum has different dents which are tuned to different notes.
The bigger the pan the lower the note. Soprano, Alto, Baratones and Bass.
The tune is played by Tenors or 'Ping-Pong' drums.
Latin Percussion - Bongos, Congas, Maracas, Claves, Woodblocks.
Modern Drum Kit / Electric, Acoustic & Bass Guitars, Woodwind & Brass.
